Never bring a bamboo spear to a beanbag fight

A 22-year-old Sheboygan man was charged today after police ended a four-hour standoff by shooting him with a beanbag round as the man wielded a knife and bamboo spears, officials said.

Patric J. Olson, who has a history of mental health issues, threatened to kill officers and shouted incoherently throughout his contact with police, court records show. The incident in downtown Sheboygan began Tuesday afternoon and culminated with the police takedown shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Olson, of 819-A New York Ave., is charged with felony failure to comply with an officer’s attempt to take a person into custody and two misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct. He could face up to seven and a half years in prison, if convicted on all counts.

According to police and a criminal complaint:

Police were first called to Olson’s apartment — an upper flat — about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday after several people in the area reported he was standing on his balcony shouting incoherently. One woman said Olson also mimed pointing a gun at her, cocking it and pulling the trigger.

Olson ran into his apartment and closed the door when an officer arrived on scene, saying he would not come out because he would be arrested and framed for killing Steven Avery. He then continued to scream or mutter nonsense about war, terrorists, the devil and having a “license to kill” police officers.

The officer ultimately left the scene, telling others in the area to contact police if Olson left the area. Officers returned about 10 p.m. after callers reported Olson had left, returned and could be seen brandishing a weapon.

Officers posted near the door during the standoff said Olson brandished two bamboo spears about 2 feet long as well as an 8-inch knife. The officers also saw Olson lighting a piece of cardboard or paper on fire and repeatedly saying, “I will kill you all.”

Lt. Mike Williams of the Sheboygan Police Department said Olson showed himself outside several times, but then retreated back into the apartment. About 2 a.m., he came out with the knife and spears and refused to go back inside.

A member of the department’s Emergency Response Team shot Olson with a 48-mm bean bag round, incapacitating him enough to take him into custody.

“He came outside, had the knife and the bamboo spears, (was) making some threats, refused to put them down,” Williams said. “He had been coming and going and retreating back inside. This time he didn’t retreat and he refused to let go of the weapons.”

Williams said the full ERT was just beginning to assemble at the scene at the time, though several team members had been on hand earlier since they were on duty when the standoff began.

The incident continues Olsen’s pattern of threatening behavior and mental health issues, including a 2010 disorderly conduct conviction for attempting to make a Molotov cocktail and threatening to blow up the Sheboygan County Division of Health Services building, court records show. He is currently on probation for a misdemeanor conviction of unlawful phone use threatening harm, which occurred in December.
