L.A. County approves $207,000 settlement to patient who jumped from hospital window

Read the document: Ramiro Polanco and Ana Linares v. County of Los Angeles, et al. Los Angeles County supervisors approved a settlement Tuesday of nearly $207,000 to a psychiatric patient who jumped out of a window at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in 2008 and injured his head.
The patient, Ramiro A. Polanco, later filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles County, which operates Olive View-UCLA, alleging that the Sylmar hospital "failed to adequately supervise him and failed to prevent him from jumping out of the window," according to a summary of the settlement provided to the Board of Supervisors.
The county has paid more than $100,000 in attorney fees in the case to date.
In a corrective action plan, county officials said they have since made the windows "psychiatric safe" with reinforced panes and provided education to the nursing staff on assessing patients' behavior.
