Elderly man rescued after driving into Lake Balboa

Two bystanders jumped into Lake Balboa on Friday to rescue an elderly man who accidentally drove into the water.
The man, identified by KABC-TV Channel 7 news as Max Arutanay, apparently pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. His late-model black four-door compact then jumped the curb, rolled down a grassy embankment and slid into the San Fernando Valley lake.
Video footage showed that the car was never entirely submerged in the shallow depths, but Arutanay does not know how to swim and could not make it to shore unassisted, according to Channel 7. Two bystanders immediately came to his aid.
“I am very, very happy to my people coming taking me up,” Arutanay, 80, said in broken English to a television reporter.
Arutanay’s wife Lucy also expressed gratitude.
“I am glad people help him and we are appreciate for that,” she said.
Both were watching when, about 4:30 p.m., a white tow truck pulled their car out of the drink.
